The GOP candidates for Utah's 18th Governor, will participate in the first prime-time televised debate of the race, in five days, where they will square off in Eccles Black Box theater and face questions from members of the community.
The four Republican candidates, Thomas Wright, Greg Hughes, Jon Huntsman, and Lt. Gov. Spencer Cox will face off against each other on Tuesday, June 16, at 7 p.m., and the debate will be broadcast live on KUTV-CBS (Channel 2) statewide, for 90 minutes.
The Pioneer Park Coalition and KUTV-CBS will be hosting the debate, with KUTV 2 News anchor Heidi Hatch and retired award-winning reporter Rod Decker as moderators.
The candidates will face questions about COVID-19, homelessness, protesting, racial disparities, Utah’s economy, and how they plan to guide Utah as the next Governor. Voters can submit their own questions before June 12th to be considered for the debate by emailing debatequestions@kutv2.com!
Between 7-8 pm each candidate will be given 12 minutes for one-on-one time with the moderators to answer questions from the community, and the moderators. The next hour will be like previously televised debates, but split into two twenty-minute sessions. The focus of the first session will be on current events. Each candidate will be asked separate questions but will have the opportunity to answer any question with the raise of their hand. After this, a second session will follow similarly but instead will focus on the future of Utah. The debate will conclude with each candidate issuing a one-minute final thought.
The debate will be presented in accordance with the Utah Department of Health guidelines to minimize the spread of COVID-19 and support social distancing.
