If you’re interested in helping the homeless people in the Salt Lake City area, there are a number of effective ways to do so. Many of the homeless organizations in the city have a list of urgent needs. Here’s an overview.
How to Help the Homeless in Salt Lake City | Pioneer Park Coalition
The Road Home
The list of needed items for The Road Home includes:
· New underwear
· Socks
· Pillows
· Coats and jackets in any size
· Jeans
· Warm clothing like sweaters or sweatshirts
· Footwear
· Blankets
· Towels
· Diapers in sizes 5 and 6 as well as pull-ups
· Formula and baby bottles
· Summer apparel
Take items to The Road Home on Rio Grande Street or to the facility on 529 West and 7300 South in Midvale. When donating items, make sure that they are new or gently used. They should also be clean and in top condition. Check the shelter’s website(link) if you need additional details. The organization is planning to close the shelter downtown by September, but the Midvale one will stay open. The organization will soon begin running its new center in South Salt Lake.
Two new centers will be opening in the summer. The Catholic Community Services of Utah is set to operate the men’s and women’s centers while the Volunteers of America will oversee the women’s center. Both facilities will be located in Salt Lake City. The organizations will be accepting donations for all programs.
Volunteers of America
The Volunteers of America is in need of items like:
· Underwear
· Sleeping bags
· UTA passes
· Gift cards
· T-shirts
· Athletic shorts
· Sunscreen
· Shampoo
· Conditioner
Catholic Community Services
Located at 440 South and 400 West, the Catholic Community Services needs items like:
· Pots and pans
· Microwaves
· Laundry soap
· New or used vehicles that run
Keep in mind that donated items to the Catholic Community Services don’t have to be new, but if you’re donating something used, then make sure that it is clean and in good shape. There are things that you shouldn’t donate, so if you have questions, just check the organization’s website. You can always donate time or money instead of material items.
Donating Where Needed
Donations like new or gently used clothing in addition to toiletries and gift cards will help the homeless. There are other organizations that could use your donations, places like the Rescue Mission, South Valley Services and the Center for Women and Families. Consider donating today.
